Why I Trim On A Regular Basis

I used to be the girl who would try to trim about once a year if possible. What I noticed from doing this is that by waiting so long to trim I'd end up having to cut more than I wanted and that my ends were not where I wanted them to be. Now don't get me wrong, I totally understand why so many of my fellow healthy hair ladies steer clear of the scissors (bad experience with a stylist, want to retain as much length as quickly as possible, etc).
Luckily I've found that for myself trimming my hair every 4 (or 5) months has worked wonders for my ends and my length retention. Not to mention because I get trims a bit more often I end up getting my ends dusted versus an actual cut! I also find that I experience fewer split ends. The icing on the cake for me is that I'm a sucker for lush, thick, freshly trimmed ends.
I mean let's face it...meeting our goal with scraggly ends isn't what we want! How often do you ladies trim and how is it working for you?

  1. You are right about trimming your hair. I have been doing the same thing too. It's a matter of health Vs. Length. Unhealthy length is never a good idea.

    1. I totally agree! I find by trimming my hair regularly it helps my ends to remain healthy and I retain more length.

  2. I struggle with the to trim or not to trim debate constantly! I'm scissor happy and I lover of lush blunt ends so I find myself starting with a trim and ending up with a cut. The only sure fire way that I've been able to tell when I need a trim is when my hair starts to have disrespectful, unruly, tangly ends. I'm sooo not about that 2-3 hour detangling sessions!

Thanks for sharing your perspective Court!

  3. I used to trim once a year too. Now I'm trying out trimming every 12 weeks. Hopefully this works out better for my ends. Nice post!

    1. You're ends have really been improving so I'm sure regular trims will help keep them on track! Thank you!

  4. I never really trimmed my hair before my hair journey unless I went to the salon, which wasn't often. Once I started a hair journey, I started trimming after my relaxers every 4 to 6 months. I really love blunt cut ends and healthy ends, so I find myself trimming to keep them looking good. Great post and your hair looks gorgeous!!!

    1. I only get my ends trimmed in the salon because I'm not quite ready to do home trims! Thank you!

  5. I too never used to trim my hair before my hair journey. And when I started my hair journey, I waited 5 months to trim. When I went to the stylist for the trim, she ended up chopping off with very blunt scissors, which caused more damage. Now, I do my own trims (dusting) every 4 months and my ends are starting to look healthy. I focus on health as opposed to length.

    1. Unfortunately every stylist doesn't understand the difference between a trim and a cut :/ I'm happy you've found something that works for you!

  6. I can get verrrrry scissor-happy but I also have really fine hair that's prone to splits, so I try to dust every 2 months for preventative measures or trim every 4.

  7. I stick to my regular dusting/trim every 4 months and only trim what's needed!
