Creamy Crack? Who Said I Was Addicted?!

I rarely pay attention to the natural vs relaxed debate because honestly I find it to be silly and pointless. I love relaxed hiar, I love texlaxed hair, I love natural hair...but above all else I love HEALTHY hair! I seriously debated on if I even wanted to do this post, but no matter how much I tried to let it go the thought just kept nagging at my brain so here I am. This post was actually inspired by an instagram posting by one of my beloved college classmates. I was happily scrollng through instagram and ran across her picture (she's natural and her hair is fabulous!). She'd just gotten her hair straightened and a fierce cut! I read her caption and that's when I saw the words 'Say no to creamy crack'. Now I've heard the phrase before and never really gave it much thought, but for someone reason on this day I really started thinking about the term and what that really means. Eventually I came to the conclusion that while I enjoy my relaxed hair I am in no way addicted. I truly believe that each person has to do what's best for their hair as well as themselves and their lifestyle. For me at this point I choose to remain relax. Does it mean that I'll never go natural...nope, but I could very well remain relaxed for quite a while. I think that the term creamy crack is used because some people associate relaxers with dry, damaged, brittle hair that won't grow. Well ladies I'm hear to tell you that I have seen so many wonderful ladies both in real life as well as in the blogging and YouTube world that are living testimonies that healthy relaxed hair does exist! So I guess I've said all of this to say a hair choice is just that...a choice...not an addiction...not some horrible habit that you must break, but a choice that works for you. After all, healthy hair is the best hair! Happy hair growing :) Until next time!

Fitness Fridays | Plateaus...Jumping the Hurdle

Plateau is probably one of the most dreaded words within the weight loss world. Honestly it didn't have much meaning to me until it came in and just turned my little weight loss world upside down! For those who may not know plateau is a nice way of saying 'NOTHING IS HAPPENING!' I experienced my first plateau after I'd lost my first 20 lbs, which for the most part came off smoothly. Then suddenly it seemed like my scale became fixated on one number and wouldn't move! I was annoyed, disappointed, and frustrated at the same time. Thankfully I've learned a thing or two about breaking through plateaus and am happily sharing in hopes of saving y'all some of the same frustration that I experienced.

  • Be Honest- Sometimes we expereince plateaus because we've lost a certain amount of weight and our body decides to try to hold on to the rest, BUT sometimes we experience plateaus because we haven't been as diligent as we should have been in our eating and exercising habits. I long ago had to come to terms with the fact that my weight loss had stalled because I'd gotten a bit too comfortable. An extra bite of this here and a skipped workout there wouldn't make a difference right? WRONG! So if you're experiencing a plateau first have an honest conversation with yourself and see if you've really been giving it your all and make the necessary adjustments from there.
  • Change Your Eating - Are you eating the same boring foods everyday (chicken, salad, rice, repeat)? Try something new! Our bodies get tired of the same old thing and sometimes something as simple as introducing new foods into our diet is just the change we need to jump over our plateau hurdle. Like with exercise I also get tired of eating the same thing so I like to incorporate different things into my diet. Tired of chicken? Try Salmon. Tired of salad? Try spinach or asparagus! There's a whole healthy food world out there waiting for us to explore it! Don't limit yourself for the sake of being healthy. Your mind and body will soon get tired of it if you do!

  • Switch It Up! - When I first started working out I would diligently go to the gym 4-5 days a week, hop on the nearest elliptical and sweat myself into a tizzy for 30-45 minutes. Sound boring? Believe me it was as boring as it sounds and before long my mind and body were both bored to tears! Furthermore I wasn't challenging my body. My body had gotten used to my 30-45 minutes on the elliptical and it took my scale refusing to budge before I figured out that it was time to give my precious elliptical a rest and explore other options. Now I do a variety of things such as Zumba, Walking, Jogging, Strength training, YouTube Workouts, etc. Basically I keep my body guessing and in turn my scale finally rewarded me by moving!

  • Keep Pushing! - Trust me I know plateaus suck. They're not fun, they're draining, and they can make you feel like all of your hard work is in vain. However, I promise you that if you just keep trying you will break through that plateau!

Is It Always Worth it To Use Up Products?

As some of you already know one of my goals for the month of January is to use up products in my product stash that my hair and I aren't the biggest fans of. Lately, I've been thinking though, is it really worth it to try and use up a product if your hair HATES it? Am I saying that every product that produces an 'eh' reaction from my hair should be tossed...absolutely NOT! I'm talking about those products that no matter how many oils you add to them, no matter how much heat, no matter how much you try and mix it with something else your hair still hates it! I've come to the conclusion that those products (especially if I didn't pay that much for them) will either be donated to someone else who's hair may love them or will be tossed in the garbage. I love my hair too much to compromise it's health just to use up a product. At the same time I've had lovely results just by adding a few oils to other products to make them tolerable enough where I can finish using them. So what do you guys think? Is it always worth it to try and use up a product regardless of what your hair thinks?

15 Minute Flexi Rod Set!

Have you ever had somewhere to go and wanted a different hairstyle besides the traditional bun? Well that was definitely me on Friday! I had an Ugly Christmas Sweater party to attend and had been toying with different hairstyles all day. Finally I decided to do a flexi rod set on dry hair. Now with only 3 hours to spare between styling my hair and having to be at the party I was a bit nervous because well it kinda takes all of the fun out of a party when you HATE your hair! Here's what I did...
  • I parted my hair using a comb and then sectioned my hair into four sections using my FINGERS (this is important because it allows you to style your flexi rod set with less manipulation, which means less frizz!)
  • I then spritzed my section of hair with a mixture of water and aloe vera juice. I used just enough to get my hair slightly damp.
  • Dusted off and applied approximately 1 pump of my lotta body foaming wrap lotion (to give my hair a slight hold) for each section.
  • Next I rolled my hair using 4 flexi rods per section for a total of 16 rods.
  • After this I sat under my hooded dryer for about 25 minutes to help my hair to set and to remove any dampness that may have remained.
That's all I did! After sitting under the dryer I left the flexi rods in until about 40 minutes before it was time for me to head out the door. I gently removed each flexi rod and then using a bit of my Macadamia  Natural Healing oil separated my curls. Here's what my curls looked like before I began separating them.

I was quite impressed with how nice my set turned out considering I left the rollers in for about 2.5 hours max! I spritzed just a bit of my Mizani Humidity Resistant Mist to help give my hair an extra bit of hold in the elements and was out the door. Over all I was totally pleased with my results even though one small section didn't curl the way I wanted it too. I'm you guys see that one loose curl lurking around in the pictures, but for a 15 minute flexi rod set I wasn't mad one bit!

Of course I had to include a few pictures from the Ugly Christmas Sweater party! And yes Rudolph's nose lights up!

Hair Porosity Test

Many of those in the hair world have heard about the Hair Porosity test as well as what Low Porosity vs High Porosity means for your hair. I'll admit that while I have heard a lot about porosity I personally did not know what it means for my head of hair! While enjoying a lazy post Thanksgiving Saturday and doing a little reading on BlackHairMedia.com I was inspired to give the hair porosity test a try!

How do I Perform the Low Porosity Test? I went into my kitchen to grab a small glass and filled it with tap water. After running my fingers through my hair I found about 3 shed hairs, which i dropped into the water and then set my timer for 3 minutes. After the 3 minutes were up I looked into the glass to see that my hair was still floating at the top, which means that I have low porosity hair.

What does having Low Porosity hair mean? Basically it means that my hair is resistant to moisture...there's a shocker! Ultimately because I 'suffer' from low porosity hair many products may 'sit' on my hair instead of absorbing into my hair. From various articles and forums I've noticed a trend that hot oil treatments, DCing with heat, and use moisturizing products and/or humectants. Some also recommend minimal protein treatments.

Will this information effect my regimen? The short answer to that question is not really. Most of the information and tips that I've read about low porosity hair I've actually already learned throughout my hair journey! Knowing this earlier in my hair journey probably would've reduced the dry hair struggles I went through. However now I deep condition regularly and normally throw in a mid week cowash because my hair tends to be on the dryer side and doesn't hold moisture quite as long. I've also found my holy grail moisturizer that keeps my hair soft and supple (Giovanni Direct Leave In). The one thing that I did learn is that Roux Porosity Control isn't really a product that's made for my hair as it is intended for high porosity hair, which would explain why I've never noticed a true difference in my hair since using the bottle that I have at home. Even though minimal protein treatments are recommended by some I will continue my 1x/month protein treatments because I firmly believe that all hair needs protein as some point and too much of anything include moisture can be bad!

Bed, Bath, & Beyond's Health and Beauty Section!!!

So I am so excited to share what I discovered today in Bed Bath and Beyond today!!! Lately when reading some of my favorite beauty blogs I keep seeing people mention that they've spotted some of the latest and greatest makeup items in Bed Bath and Beyond. Who would've thought! Well I happened to be near one today and out of curiosity decided to check out the health and beauty section. Y'all I was blown away! Not only does Bed, Bath, and Beyond have a great makeup section, but they have a HUGE Hair product section! AND to make it EVEN better they also have their own generic brand called Harmon Face Value of some of the top product such as Paul Mitchell's 'The Detangler' and Matrix Biolage's 'Detangling Solution'. To top all of this off if you are signed up to receive Bed Bath and Beyond's coupons like I am we are talking about HUGE savings here! I also noticed that the prices seem to be better than Walmart or Target. Oh and did I mention that Bed Bath and Beyond accepts any competitors coupons! I was so mesmerized that I had to take a few pictures!

Hairfinity Craze?

I'm wondering if I'm the only person who's noticed the Hairfinity craze as of lately. I've known about Hairfinity for a few years, but I don't recall seeing the amount of Celebrity endorsements for the product that I see now! So far I've seen endorsements from Keshia Knight Pulliam (The Cosby's), Rasheeda (LHHATL), Porsha Stewart (RHOA), and Toya Carter (Tiny & Toya). I've read all about the product however, the $24 per bottle (for a 1 month supply) has always made me hesitate about ordering the product. Either way the product seems to do what is says as I've seen both celebrities as well as friends and associates praise this product! So I've said all of to ask y'alls opinion because I'm curious. Have you all tried this product (or would you be willing to try it) and if so how did you like it?

Dear Hair....I Miss You!

So over the last few weeks I've been reading tons of wash day posts (which are my favorite types posts by the way!) and each time I read about someone's wash day it makes me miss the heck outta my hair! The oddest part about all of this is I decided to get a temporary long term protective style to give myself and my hair a break from each other and now of course I'm missing my hair like crazy. I'm seriously counting down the days until I take my Senegalese twist install down. I'm planning to remove my braid install on the weekend of November 16th and since my hair is thriving and moisturized I will stick with that plan. For now I'm living vicariously through every wash day post and lovingly feeling my super soft and moisturized new growth to help deal with my slight case of seperation anxiety. On another note the next part of my Braid regimen series (Totally Twisted Part 2) will be up this weekend. Stay tuned!

Bantu Knot Results!

As I mentioned in my previous wash day post I planned to do a bantu knot out to rock this weekend. I only did 4 bantu knots and as a result I wasn't as happy with my results, however I think the real reason my bantu knots looked a little weird is because my hair is cut into layers. Since I didn't like the way it looked down I decided to smooth my bantu knots into a banana clip with a cute decorative headband. Let me just say I loved the look! The only styling products that I used were my Giovanni direct leave in and a bit of coconut oil.

Hair Ramblings...

I'm having a I feel like I'm not making any progress moment even though my progress pictures clearly show otherwise! I want my hair to be long right now! To help soothe some of these crazy thoughts I've decided to rock a set of box braids towards the end of September (or maybe earlier)! I'm really excited because I've always been a braids wearer, but when I moved I didn't have my trusted braider and I did not have good experiences with the braiders in my area. Finally my coworker found a lovely older lady who braids gently without using gel and moisturizes each section of hair before installing the braids. I swear the heavens opened up when my coworker told me this! I was still reluctant to get braids until I saw how her hair did after she removed her set. Her grew beautifully and that was all the convincing I needed! Plus I need a break! I know that keeping your hair healthy while rocking braids requires some maintenance, but not nearly as much as I normally have to do. I've come up with a plan to prevent a setback like I experienced before (my nightmare detangling session...). I will get my box braids installed once I am 3 weeks post and will only keep them in for a total of 8 weeks. I will keep my scalp clean and moisturized along with the length of my hair. When I remove the braids I will detangle each section of hair thoroughly and deep condition my hair in 4 sections. I will NOT even attempt to detangle my hair while it is wet! I'm looking forward to blogging and vlogging about braid maintenance, etc once I get my install.

I know you guys are probably like it's June...why is she worried about something that's not happening until September?! I believe in planning early :)

Why I'm Loving the T-shirt Method!

So for the longest time I've been avoiding the t-shirt method like nobody's business simply because I really had zero faith that it would even work! I know that silly considering I've read countless stories of success with the T-shirt method, but for whatever reason I just wasn't interested in giving it a try until now. Randomly during my last 2 wash day sessions I decided to give this method a whirl. After coating my hair with my oil mixture and deep conditioning with my Silk Elements Kera Mineral Deep Conditioner and the last bit of my Vanilla Silk Dreams conditioner (Yay for me for finishing up another product!) I squeezed the excess water from my hair and wrapped the T-shirt around my hair. Since I normally leave my turbie twist on my hair for about 20-30 minutes I decided to do the same with the t-shirt. After this I applied my leave ins (Kimmaytube Leave in w/ a twist and GVP Paul Mitchell Skinny Serum). I then tied a satin scarf around my neck in a cape like fashion (I got this idea from PrettyWitty77) and allowed my hair to air dry. I swear my hair air dried so soft and fluffy without turning into a big frizz ball. Each time I've used the t-shirt method I've noticed that once my hair dries it seems to be more soft and supple and even stays moisturized better and longer. I never would've thought that something as simple as a t-shirt could do all of that! Have you guys tried the t-shirt method? If so please let me know how it worked for you!

My Summer Beauty Wishlist!

So as usual I've got my eye on a couple of things that I'm patiently (not so much!) waiting to purchase at some point this summer and/or maybe fall!

White Lightening Pens - I was initially introduced to this product by Nitraab (one of my favorite makeup gurus on YouTube). These pens contain a special teeth whitening formula that whitens your teeth while you sleep without causing sensitivity!

Baby Foot - This product is basically a deep skin exfoliant that removes dead skin, callouses, etc.

PMD Personal Microderm - This product enables you to get professional microdermabrasion treatments at home that minimize wringkles, fine lines, enlarged pores, and acne blemishes. Being an acne sufferer who's finally getting it under control I do have some scarring on my face that I would love to make goa away! This product gives me hope :) I initally heard about this product from EbonyCPrincess as well as Traycee from Kiss. You can check out their reviews here and here.

Tressemme Naturals Conditioner- I've had my eye on this conditioner for about a year now, but somehow other hair purchases got in the way! I think this will make a great cowashing conditioner. The thing that excites me the most about this conditioner is that it is silicone free and promises to not only moisturize, but make the hair 10X stronger with just one use! And at only about $6 for 25 fl oz how could I resist!

MAC lipglasses- Lately I've been dabbling in lipsticks, however my first true love in the world of lippies is lipgloss! I've only purchased one MAC lipglass before, but that one lipglass gave me shine like no other! In particular I have my eye on the Nicki Minaj Viva Glam 2 lipglass and maybe a nice coral color of some sort. At this point I've determined that it is necessary for me to add a couple to my stash!

Julie G nail polishes- Julie G is a youtuber who has her own nail polish brand that is sold at rite aid. I tried her nail polish line out after seeing a few pictures of some of the color options. I love that she has a wide variety of colors that are long lasting and the best part is...they're only $3.99! Her brand reminds me of Essie, but at a much cheaper price! They can be found at your local riteaid!

Revlon Lipsticks- I love Revlon lipsticks because they are so moisturizing and pair great with a simple lipgloss! The four lippies that I have my eye on right now are Blushing Nude, Just Enough Buff, Candy Pink, and Pink sugar. I'll wait until walgreens or CVS has a sale on stock up!

I'm thinking each month I will purchase 1 or 2 items off of my wishlist not to exceed $25. For more expensive items such as my PMD I will probably hold off on for a while

Lazy Wash Day

So Tuesday evening my hair was desperately in need of a wash, but I swear for the life of me I just didn't feel like going through my normal steps (hot oil treatment, detangling, tea spritz, deep conditioning, hair one, towel dry, blah blah blah!). I seriously sat there and contemplated just skipping the wash day all together, but I did not like the way my hair was feeling and I knew ignoring it would do more harm than good. Instead I sucked it up and decided to cut my wash day process in half by skipping most of the steps. Here's what I did.

  1. I parted my hair in 2 sections in stead of my normal 4 and oiled my scalp with my (EVOO and grapseed oil mixture).
  2. Next I coated each of my two sections of hair with my oil mixture.
  3. After that I spritzed each section of my hair with water and then applied my moisturizing conditioner (a mixture of my Silk Elements Kera Minerals DC and the Silk Dreams Vanilla silk DC).
  4. I sat under my heated conditioning cap for about 10 minutes and then hopped in the shower and rinsed my hair.
  5. I wrapped my hair in my turbie twist for about 15 minutes and then let my hair air dry for about an hour.
  6. It was still damp, but I went ahead and lightly detangled each section and moisturized and sealed with my Giovanni Direct Leave and coconut oil.

When I woke up the next morning my hair was fully dry and felt so soft and moisturized. I've been rocking a bun just like this since then!

April's Hair, Health, & Beauty Goals Review and June's Goals!

I swear the months just fly by! Perhaps if I'd had just a few more days added to the month of May maybe I would've been more successful, but there's always June right?
  1. Wash/Cowash hair at least once a week (possibly twice) if my hair needs it. I did a great job with washing my hair twice a week. It's apart of my weekly routine now so I'm used to it!
  2. Continue doing tea rinses at least once a week. Yet again I've added this as apart of my weekly wash day routine so this wasn't hard for me to do.
  3. Maintain my No Buy hair product challenge. Well...I think it's safe to say I FAILED! I technically only bought 1 hair product (a growth serum, which I will review at a later date). I also  repurchased my olive oil as well as some grapeseed oil, but these items were purchased using a gift card so I'm not counting them!
  4. Continue to nurture my Crown Still on track!
  5. Use up at least 1 hair product. Unfortunately I did not meet this goal :/
  6. Use up at least half of my bottle of random oils. Well I kinda met this goal, but not because I actually used up some of the oil. I threw the oils away because they weren't working for my hair and I got tired of trying to force a product on my hair that it didn't like!
  7. Maintain my protein/Moisture balance (Moisture tues/wed & Protein Sat). Still on track!
  8. Exercise atleast 4 days a week. Well I was doing good with this goal until I caught a lovely little summer cold that came along with a 102 fever. It kinda knocked the wind out of my sail so I didn't get to exercise as regularly as I would've liked :/
  9. Lose 5 lbs. *Sigh* It didn't happen. :(

Here are my goals for June!

  1. Lose 5 lbs and get back to my goal weight
  2. Apply my growth aid of choice to my scalp daily
  3. Exercise 4-5 days a week
  4. Do a flexi rod set
  5. Do a rollerset

Wash Day Wednesday's!!

I'm so sorry for the lack of posts lately, but I caught a spring cold that kicked my butt for literally a week! I'm finally feeling well enough to get back to blogging and to wash my hair! I will be getting a relaxer and a dusting/trim this weekend so today's wash day is all about protein! Because I'm relaxed I try to keep my tresses both healthy and strong and the best way to do that is to have protein as a steady rotation in my regimen. Here's what I did.

  1. I parted my hair into 4 sections and very lightly detangled each section and then applied some random oils to my scalp and to the length of my hair.
  2. I sat under my Gold N Hot conditioning cap for 10 minutes and then detangled my hair a second time ( I try to remove all of the shedded hair before water touches my hair to prevent matting).
  3. I then applied my CC's naturals marshmallow (review should be up by the end of this week!) to each section of my hair and then applied the last of my KeraPRO restorative deep conditioner to each section.
  4. Again I sat under my conditioning cap for about 15 minutes and then rinsed each section of my hair thoroughly.
  5. Lastly I applied hair one to each section of my hair as well as my scalp and rinsed after about 2 minutes.
  6. After my final rinse I wrapped my hair in my turbie twist for about 45 minutes.
  7. I then applied my kimmaytube leave in and about a quarter sized amount of the GVP 'Paul Mitchell's Skinny serum'
  8. I then tied a satin scarf around my shoulders to allow my hair to air dry straight. I got this idea from PrettyWitty77 and so far I'm loving it!
That's it for this wash day! On Friday I plan to do my usual relaxer prep steps in order to prepare for my relaxer this Friday. You can read that post here

Wednesday's Wash Day!

Another Wednesday another washday! As most of you know my wash day routine has not changed much recently well because it works! My wash days on Wednesday are all about moisture.

1. I parted my hair into 4 sections. I find this is the best way to deal with my hair on wash days.
2. After sectioning my hair I applied a mixture of random oils to each section. The mixture is random because I am working on using up some of my products.
3. I sat under my Gold N Hot conditioning cap for 10 minutes and the gently detangled each section with my shower comb.
4. I spritzed my CC's Marshmallow and Burdock root tea to each section (review coming soon).

5. I applied a mixture of my Silk Dreams Vanilla silk DC, silk elements kera minerals DC, and a squirt of roux porosity control to each section of hair and then sat back under my heating cap for another 15 minutes.

6. After thoroughly rinsing the conditioner out I applied hair one to my scalp as well as the length of my hair and allowed it to sit for about 5 minutes while I showered.
7. After a final rinse I squeezed out any excess water and then wrapped my hair in my turbie twist (that thing is a God send!). I usually leave my hair in the turbie twist for 30-45 minutes while I do random chores around the house. I find that by allowing my hair to dry until its just damp my leave ins can penetrate my hair better which gives me more soft and moisturized hair as a result!
8. After removing my turbie twist I applied about a quarter sized amount of my kimmaytube leave in with a twist and about a dime sized amount of my Paul Mitchell skinny serum (Sally's generic version)
9. Usually I'll sit under the dryer on cool setting for about 40 minutes but I really didn't feel like being bothered with it so I just tied a satin strip around my edges and let my hair air dry. I was left with soft supple moisturized hair!
